2021 Was a Year for the Record Books

By Chris Visser

Once-in-a-lifetime anomalies on both the supply and demand side of the trucking economy drove class 8 auction and retail pricing in 2021 to the highest levels in the modern era.

On the auction side, pricing for late-model sleeper tractors was 96.3% higher than 2020, and 89.2% higher than 2019. On the retail side, pricing was 40.7% higher than 2020, and 21.4% higher than 2019.

Most analysts predict status quo through at least the first half of the year. Later in 2022, a relaxation of parts shortages and a return towards more typical economic activity could place downward pressure on used truck pricing.
